Entebbe Mayor Fabrice Rulinda has said they are standing firm on their four-day ultimatum for KCCA to get a new dumping site for garbage.
Last week, Entebbe Municipal council gave Kampala authorities four days to use the Nkumba-Bufulu landfill for garbage disposal.
The four days elapsed on Monday.
Speaking on Tuesday afternoon, Rulinda said following the elapse of the four days, they will not allow any more trucks to dump garbage in Nkumba.
“Like we said, we made our resolution of four days which expired and as it is, we are not shifting on that position,” Rulinda said.
“As of today, we are going to stop trucks from dumping garbage in Entebbe. We sympathise with the people in Kampala but we have nothing to do.”
It was reported recently that Cabinet was yesterday, Monday supposed to discuss the fate of garbage disposal in Kampala after the collapse of Kiteezi landfill.
Speaking on Tuesday, Entebbe Mayor said they are yet to hear from what cabinet said but insisted , they cannot take in any more garbage from Kampala.
He explained that the Nkumba landfill can only handle 150 metric tonnes of garbage and it makes no sense, adding another 2500 metric tons from Kampala.
“To increase the capacity of garbage received by our landfill is to create a bigger problem for us and will affect tourism, business and many other items. Dumping sites come with birds which in this case affect air traffic and if we don’t handle garbage, airlines might even pull out of Entebbe,” Rulinda said.
